Matt Kiefer is versatile for a 6-foot-9 player. An inside-outside threat all
wrapped up in one player. Taking advantage of a growth spurt that sent him
from a 6-foot-2 freshman to a 6-foot-9 junior, Kiefer dribbles like a guard
yet bangs like a post player. Improving his strength is a priority at the
moment for preparation to play Division I ball.
Schools pursuing Kiefer include Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin, Xavier, Notre
Dame and Iowa State. Kiefer would like to stay close to home so his parents
can travel to see him play, and would like to play for a program where he
could contribute early. He is an excellent student (3.975 GPA) taking
college prep classes. His brother John is an engineering student at
Purdue, and his father is also a Purdue graduate.
Kiefer verbally committed to Purdue on June 28, 2001. He chose Purdue over
Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan, Kansas and Evansville, but only visited one
school...Purdue. Kiefer signed with Purdue during the November 2001 early
signing period.
11-15-01...Van Coleman rates Purdue's recruiting class 15th in the nation in
an article in the Indianapolis Star. Purdue received a LOI today from Matt
Kiefer, and will hold comment on the class until they receive letters from
Booker, Teague and Buckley. A short scouting report is posted below from
Coleman.
2-24-01...Matt Kiefer scored a quiet 10 points in very limited play for Mater
Dei against Rivet. On this Senior Night, Mater Dei coach Roger Sills started
five seniors, and played them for significant minutes throughout the game.
Even senior basketball manager Chris Stratman got the opportunity to start
and play in Mater Dei's final home game.
2-12-02...Matt Kiefer scored a season-high 32 points and added 14 rebounds in
a 81-69 win over Evansville Reitz. Kiefer shot a near perfect 12 of 13 from the
field and eight of nine from the line. Mater Dei's record improves to 16-1.
1-26-01...Class 3A No. 1 Evansville Mater Dei was toppled on Tuesday by Castle,
73-67. Matt Kiefer scored 11 points in the loss.
1-13-01...Evansville Mater Dei (9-0) advances to the finals of the Southern
Indiana Athletic Conference tournament. Matt Kiefer, a 6'9 junior center, scored
17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 73-67 victory over Reitz.
1-05-01...This past week was rough on Indiana high school teams ranked No.1 in
their respective class team rankings. The only team to hang on to its No.1 rank
was 4A Indianapolis Pike, featuring prospect Parnell Smith. In Class 3A, No.1
Maconaquah lost two games last week and fell out of first. They were replaced
by Evansville Mater Dei, featuring prospect Matt Kiefer. Mater Dei is now 5-0
after an 84-67 victory over South Spencer on Tuesday. Kiefer led Mater Dei with
18 points. This is the first time Mater Dei has received a No.1 ranking. Two
other teams featuring Purdue prospects dropped games, and subsequently out of
their No.1 spots. Class 2A Winchesterdropped to No.2 after a Saturday loss to
Richmond, and Class 1A Central Catholic also dropped to second following a loss
last week to Carroll (Allen).
12-07-00...6-foot-9 Matt Kiefer had game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds as
Mater Dei cruised past North Posey, 71-46 on Friday.
12-10-00...After a 26 point outburst in the season opener against Mt. Vernon last
week, Matt Kiefer (6'8, 2002, Evansville Mater Dei) followed up with a more humble
nine points and eight boards in a 59-58 victory over Evansville Reitz. Kiefer also
pulled down the game's final rebound, was fouled, and hit the winning freethrow.
7-20-00...We are getting word that Coach Keady travelled to Evansville to scout
Mater Dei junior big man Matt Kiefer. Kiefer is a 6-foot-7 forward who plays for
Warrick County AAU.
Scouting report by Gene Keady..."Matt's a great student and plays very smart on
the court. He's been very well coached in high school so he's got the fundamentals
down. He has great size and along with Booker will help our front line next
season." (11/21/01, Purdue SID)
Scouting report by Van Coleman..."Matt Kiefer is very, very skilled. He shoots the
ball well from the perimeter and can take the ball to the hole." (11/15/01,
Indianapolis Star)
Anonymous scouting report..."Kiefer can do it all he looks a little herky jerky
with his moves but he plays hard and can put the ball on the floor. He plays hard
every minute and can shoot the three ball. He has a nice left hand. Needs to get
a little stronger but still is tough. Really good player who can play the 2, 3,
4, or 5." (11/19/00)
Scouting report by Mike Pegram..."Kiefer reminded me a lot of a Kirk Haston/Eric
Anderson type player. He is an excellent shooter, and got most of his points on
8-10 foot jumpers. He showed a nice turnaround on the baseline. He is a bit
skinny but not [Jeffrey] Newton type skinny. The biggest downside to him is that he does
not play real physical, or at least did not tonight. And fans in the stands made
comments along those lines too -- fans that have seen him before. And he is about
an inch shorter than Anderson and Haston -- that makes a bit of a difference.
If he does grown a bit more that will obviously make him a better prospect." (1/13/00)
