2001 Boilermaker midseason commentary
At the midpoint of the 2001 college football season the Purdue Boilermakers are 4-1 overall and tied for second in the BigTen with a 2-1 conference record. Surprising to some yet disappointing to many.
First, the good news. Special teams are much improved. Travis Dorsch has shown senior maturity both on the field and on the sideline. The kicker/punter has received two BigTen Player of the Week honors and is leading the nation with a 50.4 yard per punt average. A game tying fast field goal with one second remaining on the clock at the Miracle in Minnesota will be a Boilermaker alltime highlight.
Defense, Defense, Defense. Three times in five games Stuart Schweigert has intercepted opponents and stopped scoring drives either at the end of a half or the end of the game. If that's not well-coached well-played football, what is? Schweigert and Akin Ayodele have each received a BigTen Player of the Week honor.
The 2001 Purdue offensive unit has been hard to watch for diehard Boiler fans. Penalties, sacks, and lack of big plays leave only questions. All of the remaining games on the schedule are against opponents that are either looking for a bowl bid or the Old Oaken Bucket. The offense must produce!

What would have been Brandon Hance's 9th TD pass of the season was fumbled into the endzone and recovered by Michigan State. Halftime score, 0-0. The second half was a battle between two freshman quarterbacks, Kyle Orton for Purdue and Damon Dowdell for Michigan State. Michigan State scored first to take a 7-0 lead. Game Notes: Halftime score Notre Dame 7, Purdue 6. Plagued by questionable calls for both teams this game almost became ugly. Final score Notre Dame 24, Purdue 18.
