Volleyball team eager to take next step

Five years ago, Purdue volleyball was an afterthought, a team that many Big Ten Conference opponents could usually count on for a victory.

As the 2007 season gets under way Friday at the Duke Invitational, the Boilermakers
are legitimate conference championship contenders and have their sights set on a deeper run in the NCAA tournament after last year's Sweet 16 berth.

"I don't think we take it for granted, because going to the Sweet 16 is a great accomplishment for our program," senior setter Anne Mastandrea said. "But being competitive athletes, we all want to go higher.

"This year for sure we want to go to the Elite Eight. I also want to finish in the top three in the Big Ten. What happened last year is going to fuel us this season."
