I agree.
Red shirts were originally for medical situations, as you said. FB and now mens' BB has somehow redefined the terms and processes so that redshirts are used to cover a spectrum of possibilities, including the coach deciding that the player is not ready for Big Ten competition.
Purdue's WBB would be well served, instead, to have waves of athletes challenging the opposition. I think this would not only lead to Ws on the court but also in the recruiting game, as everyone wants to play and contribute.
