In Reply to: SOOOO, since Sam is an equivelent high jumper to posted by Michael on April 28, 2008 at 06:34:53:
Juan said she was an incredible athlete because she dominated her competition in the high jump. Within his post, he indicated she jumped 5'4".
Des interpreted him to mean she was an incredible athlete because of her jump, which is not what Juan claimed. Des went on to offer "perspective" by insisting how 5'4" is not much of a jump based upon a limited set of data from IHSAA state championship results.
I chose to add to the "perspective" by:
1) illustrating relevant (your favorite word) comparisons,
2) adding pertinent context (first year of competition, state population, class of school, etc.)
3) narrowing the scope of judgment (towards Juan's conclusion), and
4) showing related comparisons (Maya Moore).
I saw no reason for des to undercut Juan's conclusion (Sam is an incredible athlete) by challenging what des thought was the erroneous basis for that conclusion (she jumped 5'4" vs. dominating the competition.)
My TIC (in case you missed it) post regarding Moore was intended to illustrate a similar point about how commonly accepted perceptions of top players are often no more justified than Juan's conclusion regarding Sam.
I'm sorry you did not grasp that.
