and taking this one step further, last year's state high jump champ was Ellie Tidman, a freshman from Batesville. Certainly, her jump of 5'9" is much more impressive than Ostarello's, according to your argument.

And in a way, it is. After all, it is 4" higher than what Ostarello did last year.

But another point you are neglecting is that high jump results are often very sporadic due to a number of factors - like local weather conditions, condition of the high jump pit, posts, bar, or runup, and even what the athlete had for lunch that day. Any of those factors can greatly affect a high jumper's performance on any given day.

Don't believe me?

Take a look at a recent track meet in which Ms. Tidman (2007 IHSAA State Champ, remember?) recently won - and at which, set a new meet record of 5'5". That's 4 inches below her jump of 5'9" from last year. And only one inch higher than Ostarello's recent jump.

The point is that just because Ostarello did not win the SD state high jump championship with as good a jump as someone like Ellie Tidman did in Indiana, does not mean she couldn't have jumped higher. We don't know.

But it appears that a jump of 5'5" (by both state champions, Tidman & Ostarello) is not such an ordinary jump after all. Not unless the South Dearborn Invitational normally attracts only under-achievers! vbg

Juan's point was not whether Ostarello was an incredible athlete because of the 5'4" height as much as it was about how she dominated the local competition. I see nothing wrong with his point that needed all this additional "perspective" and context, do you?
