I see a couple of different possibilities behind this signing:

1) It turned out pretty well a couple of years ago when Painter signed another another unknown but athletic guard named Chris Kramer. Maybe thinks he's found another player in that mold.

2) The three guard lineup is here to stay in WL. Most of us have assumed that our guard-heavy lineup over the last few years has been driven by our available personnel. That is, Painter would go with a more traditional lineup of a Center, 2 forwards and 2 guards if we had the players to do it. It now seems like the up-tempo style that Painter wants to play is going to rely heavily on guards for the foreseeable future.

3) Reid and Hart may represent a new approach to building depth. With Martin's transfer, it's apparent that most 'top 100' players are not going to be satisfied very long with the role of 6th, 7th, or 8th man. No matter how many top players are available, it may be that in this era we're not going to be able to have more than 5 or 6 on our team at any given time. Rather than fill the remainder of our scholarships with highly recruited players waiting to transfer because they're not getting minutes, the coaching staff may be looking to recruit role players - players who have the athletic abilities needed to compete at this level, but will be satisfied with playing a role on a successful team, even if that role never involves being a starter.
