OLD GOLD FREE PRESS
Forum FAQ

 1. What are the forum rules?
  • Keep in mind that the ability to post on the Old Gold Free Press forums is NOT a right, it is a privilege. And while we respect the right of people to say whatever they wish, they do not have the privilege to say everything they wish on the Old Gold Free Press forums.
1) ALL POSTS MUST BE PURDUE SPORTS RELATED.
   a) No advertising/spam posts (or links).
   b) No gambling/casino posts (or links).
   c) No pornographic posts (or links).
2) ALL POSTS MUST INCLUDE YOUR REAL NAME.
   a) Approved nickname is acceptable.
3) ALL POSTS MUST INCLUDE A VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS.
   a) Hotmail/Yahoo accounts are acceptable.
4) NO FOUL LANGUAGE.
   a) No insulting/name calling of other posters.
   b) Language is filtered, but eFOUL/eTECH are considered foul language.
5) DON'T POST ANYTHING ABOUT A PERSON THAT YOU WOULDN'T SAY TO THEIR FACE.
   a) Purdue athlete's family and friends are watching.
   b) Trashing of the coaching staff is NOT acceptable.
   c) Trashing of the players is NOT acceptable.
  • Any post violating these rules runs the risk of being zapped. Flagrant violations (As determined by Old Gold Free Press) will result in a permanent blockage from posting on the Old Gold Free Press forums.

 2. What info should I send you if I am having problems with the forum?

  • Use our OGFP contact page and send as much information about what happened, as possible. The most important items are the text of the actual error message (if there was one), the operating system used on your computer, the program/browser name, the Old Gold Free Press page or forum name where the error was encountered, the username that you used (on forums) and the date and time that you encountered the error.
  • We have a very thorough set of forum logs that show exactly what happened on the forums every moment, of the day. If you tell me the date and time, I should be able to tell you exactly what happened (bad password, foul language, no e-mail, etc).

 3. I just spent 20 mins typing a post, & when I entered it I got an error. What gives?

  • If you plan to write a fairly long message, compose it in a text editor first like WordPad, then cut and paste, into the forum editor. That way you won't lose all your work in case of a dropped connection, or system crash on either end.
  • With most missing information error messages, your long post will be included on the error message page. If you encounter an error message that doesn't include the posted message, contact me and I will look into the possibility of changing the error message.

 4. What is "eFOUL" and/or "eTECH" ?

  • Foul language is NOT allowed on our forums, and as a result we filter all submitted names, titles, e-mail, and messages. The words range from the normal four-letter zingers, to other words that some of the anti-Purdue fans like to use a lot, like pu*ke. It also changes a few words that are derogatory to race and gender. If you see "eFOUL" or "eTECH" then part of your message has been rejected / modified by our language filters. Keep in mind, the more foul language included in a message, the whole message may be rejected.

 5. Why can't I type the name "Michelle"?
  • This is one of the drawbacks of our profanity skimmer program. Because the name "Michelle" contains the four-letter word "hell", the skimmer replaces it with "eFOUL". This pertains to the name "Michelle" appearing in the text of the message.
  • Be warned ... the skimmer treats profanity in the subject line more severely. If a word in the skimmer's bad list is in the subject line, the forum will not post ANYTHING to the forum. So anything with the name "Michelle" in the subject line will not be posted to the internet. Until we correct this issue, the inserting of a character like an asterisk in the word "Michelle", like "Miche*lle", will fool the skimmer and allow you to post.

 6. Why is the forum changing the spelling of words like "object" to "abject"?
  • Our forum has been a popular bouncing point for hackers to improve their search engine ratings. While the explanation of how they do this is long and boring, we sometimes need to have the forum software change the spelling of certain HTML code. We've identified 5 HTML commands as potentially dangerous to leave "open for business". As a result, these 5 commands (java, script, object, applet, embed) are being modified to (mocha, scriipt, abject, apple, embad) to prevent these commands from activating malicious code. Annoying, but it is for everyone's own safety we do this.

 7. What is a "Registered Username" and how can I get one ?
  • Registered Usernames are the Old Gold Free Press way of allowing our forum visitors to register their favorite username, so that no other forum user/visitor is allowed to use it. Posting with a registered username requires you to enter your password, but that process can be as simple as clicking on the password box (w/ cookies active).
  • Register for a OldGoldFreePress.com Forum Username

 8. I've registered my username, but the forum won't accept it. What's the problem?
  • The majority of the errors are related to the fact the username you registered is case sensitive. So if your username is "PuRdUePeTe", then it must be entered exactly that way in the future with all of the capital letters and all of the lower case letters in the right place.
  • If you've made changes to your password, via the User Center, Those changes will not be active until I (Brad) manually activate the changes. If you need to use your new password now, you need to e-mail me and let me know that you made a password change.

 9. What is "NightWatch Security" and why can't I post late at night?
  • The "NightWatch Security" system is our forum bouncer/doorman. Primarily running on all forums every night from about midnight to 6:00am, the program only allows registered users to post to the forum. Due to the lack of an administrator monitoring the forum during the overnight hours, we require all late night visitors who wish to post be registered. This cuts down on a lot of the hit-and-run type garbage posts like insults, advertisements, and general hacker mischief. "NightWatch Security" is sometimes enabled during daytime hours as a result of attacks to the forum, and to get people's attention.
  • The easiest way to avoid being a victim of the "NightWatch Security" program is to be registered and post under your registered username at all times.

 10. Why do I have to use a valid email?
  • There are two main reasons we require a valid email address to be posted. The first, and most important, is the forum administrators need a way of contacting you in the event of a question or problem. If the administrators make several attempts to contact you and none of our emails get a response, you may be temporarily banned from posting on the forum until you contact the administrators.
  • The second reason is occasionally forum conversations degrade into extended contests of urination. At, that time you may see an administrator post a message in the thread asking that the conversation be sent, to private email. For people to do that, they must have access to a valid email address.

11. What are the easiest ways to get banned permanently?
  • The administrators make many attempts to make sure visitors to the site understand when their behavior or comments on the forum are outside of our forum rules, or are upsetting to general decorum. One of the easiest way to get banned permanently is to not listen to the advice of the forum adminsitrators. Other cardinal sins that result in expulsion are cases of libel, posting of copyrighted content in mass quantities, on the forum, threats to the wellbeing of another visitor's person or property, and overly criticizing the administrators.
  • In the event threats are posted to the forum, we will provide any information we have to local authorities or access providers to make sure they are dealt with effectively. You are easily traceable on the internet, and it would massively suck if something you said in the heat of the moment resulted in your ISP or university internet connection provider pulling your account because of it.

12. What is best way to contact the forum administrators ?
  • By using our OGFP contact page you can send a message directly to either Bob or Brad. The more information that you include, the easier it will be for us to respond directly to your comment, idea, question, and/or suggestion. This contact page can also be used to let us know about potential problems and/or problem posts on OGFP forums.

13. I would like to buy advertising on the OGFP forums, how do I go about doing that?
  • We currently have a site sponsor in SELCO Engineering that covers the whole site, including the forums. At this time, there is no way that we can accept advertising on our OGFP forums.

13. What HTML commands are allowed on the forum and how do I add them ?
  • Bold Text =
          <B> YOUR TEXT HERE </B>

          <I> YOUR TEXT HERE </I>
