Coach Dave Shondell and Purdue Volleyball received their second commitment from the class of 2015 when outside hitter Alexa Smith joined the class after a weekend visit. The 6-foot-1 junior hard hitter from Monument, Colorado is ranked on the PrepVolleyball.com sophomore top 79 list and is generally perceived as a top 20 recruit. She played on the USA Volleyball Girls Youth National Team this past summer, helping the team to a silver medal at the FIVB Girls' Youth World Championships. The US team, coached by former Ohio State head coach Jim Stone, had their best showing in tournament history, improving from an 11th-place finish in 2012.
As a high school freshman, Smith exploded onto the high school scene with a 545 kill season. She followed that up as a sophomore with 489 kills on a team that finished as the Class 4A state runner-up. Through 13 games this season for Lewis-Palmer High in Colorado, Smith has 196 kills, 95 digs and 21 service aces. Smith also plays basketball, and carries a 4.0 grade point average.
Smith was due to follow up her Purdue visit last weekend with a visit to Minnesota, but ended up picking the Boilers over the Gophers, Michigan, Colorado State and UCLA. She joins Ocean Springs, Mississippi 6-foot-2 middle Blake Mohler as the second member of the 2015 class.
Alexa's mother Livia, is a Purdue graduate.
